Long Swords

What Is a Long Sword?

When most people think of a knight’s sword, they’re picturing a long sword. Straight, double-edged, with a grip long enough for one or two hands — it’s the blade that sits right between a short arming sword and a heavy greatsword.

Most measure around 100–120 cm, which makes them long enough to feel commanding but not so big that they’re clumsy. That balance of reach and control is why long swords became iconic in the Middle Ages, and why they’re still a favourite choice in LARP and cosplay today.

Long Swords in History

In the later Middle Ages, long swords became a knight’s weapon of choice. They weren’t just a symbol of status — they were practical and deadly. You could fight one-handed when speed mattered, or bring both hands to the grip for extra power and control.

Medieval masters like Fiore dei Liberi and Johannes Liechtenauer even wrote manuals on how to fight with long swords, and those techniques are still practiced today in HEMA. These weren’t ceremonial pieces; they were part of an entire martial tradition.

Some of the more famous styles included the classic knightly longsword with its cruciform hilt, the bastard sword with its longer grip, and regional versions like the espadon or spadone, which pushed the size further. Carrying one wasn’t just about prestige — it showed you had the training to use it.

Long Swords in Fantasy and LARP

Fast forward to today, and the long sword is still the “hero’s weapon.” It’s the blade you see in the hands of paladins, rangers, mercenaries, or fantasy champions.

For LARP, they make sense on a practical level too:

  • Extra reach to hold opponents at a distance.

  • More presence than a short sword, without the weight of a two-hander.

  • The choice to fight with one or two hands.

On stage or in cosplay, a long sword brings drama without looking oversized. It’s the blade that feels right in almost any heroic role.

How Epic Armoury Builds Long Swords

Epic Armoury long swords are designed for play, not steel combat. At the core is a fiberglass rod that keeps the sword stable. Around that, dense foam provides safe flexibility, and the outside is finished with latex or polyurethane for an authentic look.

The end result is a sword that looks medieval, feels balanced, and holds up to weekend after weekend of battles.

Different Long Sword Collections to Choose From

We don’t make all long swords the same way. Instead, you can pick from several collections, each with its own strengths:

  • Classic: the original latex-coated swords, versatile and immersive.

  • Ready for Battle (RFB): simple, budget-friendly models for new players.

  • Hybrid: EVA foam blades with detailed polyurethane hilts.

  • Stronghold Master Collection: lightweight, carefully balanced swords for competitive fighting.

  • Vanguard: softer foam, built durable and low-maintenance.

  • Specialty lines (like IDV): unique designs with added safety or style features.

This variety means you can choose not just a look but a feel — whether you care more about detail, durability, or ease of upkeep.

Designs: From Historical to Fantasy

Our long swords cover both sides of the spectrum. Some are rooted in history, with cruciform hilts and realistic proportions. Others lean into fantasy, with sweeping crossguards, ornate hilts, or shapes made for elves, villains, or larger-than-life heroes.

Some are hand-painted for fine detail, while others are designed to be light, practical, and easy to maintain. Whatever your character, there’s a design that fits.

Are Long Swords Safe to Use?

Yes. Every Epic Armoury long sword is built for safe combat. The fiberglass core keeps it sturdy, the foam absorbs impacts, and the rounded tips make thrusts safe.

That makes them equally at home in LARP battles, cosplay photoshoots, or stage fights under theatre lights.

Caring for a Long Sword

Foam swords don’t need much looking after, but a little care goes a long way. Store your sword flat or upright, away from heat and direct sun. Wipe it clean after events, and if it has a latex coating, use maintenance gel now and then to keep the surface flexible.

If you want even less upkeep, Vanguard and Stronghold swords skip latex entirely, which makes them easier to maintain.

Why Add a Long Sword to Your Kit?

A long sword hits the sweet spot: more reach than a short blade, but still light and manageable. It’s a commanding weapon that fits almost any heroic role, whether you’re playing a knight, a mercenary, or a fantasy champion.

With options across six collections and designs ranging from authentic medieval to bold fantasy, there’s a long sword here for every style of play.
